Kempsey Flood Plan
Residents in Kempsey will tonight find out tonight the progress of funding being secured for flood defences in the village.
They've been hit by 23 floods in 30 years and some residents affected by the great floods of July 2007 are still not back in their homes.
The meeting will start at 7.30pm on Wednesday 11th March at the Seabourne Inn in Kempsey.
A representative of Sir Michael Spicer’s office and Lib Dem parliamentary candidate Richard Burt have confirmed their attendance. There will also be an opportunity to quiz Environment Agency engineers on how the proposed flood alleviation scheme for Kempsey will work.
The meeting has been organised by the Kempsey FLood Action Group (FLAG). FLAG was created in January 2009 following disappointment that the Regional Flood Alleviation Committee had not prioritised funding for Kempsey’s flood defences in 2009/2010.
Mary Dhonau, chief executive of the National Flood Forum, said: “The sheer number of times the residents of Kempsey have flooded since 2007 alone, highlights the need for a flood alleviation scheme to be urgently prioritised. The NFF supports over 150 communities at risk of flooding and as yet we have not heard of a community facing such high and repeated risk.”
FLAG’s objective is to reapply for funding at the Regional Flood Alleviation Committee’s September meeting. Members are working with the Environment Agency, district council and parish council to create an accurate, robust presentation that reflects the true impact and cost of flooding in Kempsey.
They are also raising funds within Kempsey and involving relevant organisations to help reduce the estimated £1.45 million cost of the scheme. FLAG members and all villagers have been invited to pay a £5 subscription fee to become Friends of FLAG, to showcase Kempsey’s commitment to the scheme.
